My name is Brett. As I write this, I am 25 years old, live with three humans, six cats, and a poor old dog nearing death. I am vegan, atheist, and some variant of human (maybe). I worked today, from 10:15am to 7:00pm central time. I’ve temporarily abandoned my passion for creating music and art, learning language, and so many other things it would bring shame to begin listing. I have determined that I am to finish writing a book before I indulge again in my past interests.
‘A book!? What’s it about!?’
I’ll talk about it in another post… maybe. I only have about forty-five… maybe fifty pages. Still much work to do. And, I get easily distracted. What distracts me, I hear your mind wondering. Let’s see… About a week ago I made the mistake of upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10. It was a mistake for me because I find Unity intolerable, and the Gnome 3 desktop with 11.10 was too buggy for me. I spent that entire day attempting to make Ubuntu work with the Gnome3 desktop environment on my laptop, to no success. In the meantime, my fiance’s laptop… What? I didn’t mention I’m engaged? Well, yeah. Anyways… she hasn’t been getting a good signal on her laptop. I was tempted to try the Linux Mint Debian distro, so I used unetbootin to put it on a 2gb flash drive, booted it up on her laptop, and I was in lovvve… Green is my favorite color, by the way. And LMDE seems so clean, and shiny. So, after dinking around with LMDE for another day to see if I could tweak her wireless for a better connection (sadly, I was unable to), I put LDME on my laptop, and have been happy since with how quick and smooth it has been running. However, my story of distraction does not end there. No, no, no.
In my room, I have an old HP laser printer with an LP2 port. My desktop recently gave out (power supply), and my laptop is too new to have an LP2 port. However, my sister’s XP box DOES have an LP2 port. I’ve got to print stuff out, you know? Stuff! Like, cover letters, resumes, fiance’s college papers, applications, recipes… So, I want to be able to print stuff from my laptop, in the comfort of present location, using my printer, which I have hooked up to my sister’s old desktop (she got a spiffy Windows tablet and hasn’t touched her desktop for months). For me, networks have always been a headache, even though I’ve been messing with LAN and WAN all my life. My solution? Remote desktop! Since the computers all connect to the same router, it was easier for me to install tightVNC on her computer to receive a connection, and install an RD client in Linux. I ended up choosing Remmina, and connecting to her XP box using RDP for most functions. Remmina has the nifty feature of integrating a shared folder while using RDP so I don’t have to bother e-mailing myself or using flash drives to get the information to the printer. Yay, me! Although, I still need to use VNC for some things, such as rebooting and shutting down remotely.
I will admit I’m still a newb with Linux, but, I’m'a learnin’! Sooo… that’s an example of one of my many distractions. In the three or four days I spent fussing over all the details and playing around with this and that, I could have been working on my book. Come to think of it… in the time I’ve spent working on typing this, I COULD HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY BOOK! So, why am I writing a blog post? I’m hoping to create an ongoing blog. I have a general, undeveloped premise for this blog, and I’ll let the potential world know what that is once I work out the, er, details. Yeah. Essentially, it will focus on my interests, which include:
Music, dreams, art, cooking, paranormal, writing, whatever’s on my mind (if appropriate…), and possibly personal development. I don’t expect any one to ever read this first post, and much less to post (negative numbers of people!), but I don’t care; I’m doing this for me. World, go shove it! But, not you, reader! You don’t have to shove it. Just the rest of the world. Okay? Are we “good”? Good. So… yeah. It’s after 1:00am, here. Enjoy the air.
